JoAnne Kloppenburg’s Facebook Campaign a Direct Tie to Anti-Walker and Recall Efforts

JoAnne Kloppenburg’s official Facebook campaign page is being used by her supporters to organize protests against Gov. Scott Walker’s budget repair bill, as well as recalls against Walker, Lieutenant Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch and a Republican state legislator who supports the governor.

Furthermore, the site is filled with weeks of rants against Gov. Scott Walker, especially over his budget and efforts to restrict collective bargaining rights. Posters call him a “horrible person” and say that Republicans don’t like to “help children.” One appears to refer to Kloppenburg’s opponent, Justice David Prosser, as a “turd.” Posters also repeatedly link a vote for Prosser to a vote for Walker.

Although Kloppenburg herself didn’t post the comments – her supporters did on her public Facebook wall – as the owner of the campaign affiliated site, she could have easily deleted them. Instead, she allowed these comments to fill the wall of her campaign’s official Facebook site, turning it into a never-ending stream of partisan anti-Republican and anti-Walker vitriol. The site is an arm of her official campaign; for example, the email listed for it is a campaign email account.

At the same time, Kloppenburg continues to claim that she is non partisan and independent in other campaign materials. On her campaign website, she states: “I ask for your support to return independence to the Court and to help the Court focus – not on partisan politics or personalities – but on the important work we elect Justices to do. Supreme Court Justices should not act as advocates for any cause or group nor as legislators.”

Maybe she should take a minute to post the same message on her Facebook page wall, or to delete the comments that run counter to it.

Instead, in her name, Kloppenburg’s official campaign Facebook site has turned into a rallying cry against Walker. In one post, in which the site administrator did weigh in under Kloppenburg’s name, “JoAnne Kloppenburg for Wisconsin Supreme Court” directs supporters to a news article by noting, “Veteran Capital reporter Matt Pommer’s take on what’s at stake in this Supreme Court race. He says ‘Justice David Prosser’s re-election bid could be the linchpin in upholding the dramatic changes in the way state and local governments deal with public employees.”

And Kloppenburg herself also posted a letter to supporters on the page that states in part, “History is being made right now and we have the chance to be a part of that history. This Supreme Court election is taking place in a remarkable period in Wisconsin. It is a time that underscores the critical importance of the Wisconsin Supreme Court as a co-equal branch of government able and willing to do what American courts were meant to do: act as a check and balance on the legislative and executive branches of government. My opponent has said repeatedly he has “the most partisan background” of any of the current Supreme Court justices. The Prosser campaign manager said that re-electing the incumbent would ‘preserve the conservative majority”’on the court and ensure that the Supreme Court of Wisconsin would act as a ‘complement’ to the Republican legislature and Governor Scott Walker.”

This posting ties right into the anti-Walker diatribes on Kloppenburg’s Facebook page wall from supporter after supporter. They include the following (posters names have been removed):

From a Wisconsin woman who wrote on Kloppenburg’s wall:

“HUGE SATURDAY RALLY IN THE WORKS!
Location: Madison, Wisconsin at The Capitol Square
Time: 11:00AM Saturday, March 12th. Ready to go!? How about everyone promising to fill their car with passengers to protest. Take three or four people with you if you can and arrange to meet others there who may not have gone without a… warm invitation! Make it the biggest and best turnout for our cause and to honor our Democratic Legislators and the many, many people who have protested up to now. Let’s get old faces and new ones together and involved!
SPREAD THE WORD STARTING TODAY!!!! :)

A group called United Wisconsin.com posted a link to a site called Pledge to Recall Scott Walker and Rebecca Kleefisch | UnitedWisconsin.com. The site contains a petition to recall the governor.

Another post on the wall from a Wisconsin man says:

“The Dunn County Dems need any info on the campaign. Plans for appearances, yard signs address for making donations. Up her in this part of the State, we seem to be more focused on recalling Sheila Harsdorf, while forgetting about your campaign.”

Another poster wrote: “PROSSER=WALKER! PROSSER=WALKER! PROSSER=WALKER! PROSSER=WALKER!”

A man wrote: “People in the Milwaukee area trying to coordinate events/activities to get JK’s name around MPS, facebook me,…..’Stop the turd..Vote Kloppenburg’”

The same man also wrote, “Contacted WEAC today to encourage them to get all over this race. Every teacher in Wisconsin should know about JK. Spoke with MTEA executive board member. Asked if they could ramp up endorsement efforts. Stop Scotty…Vote for Kloppy !”

And another wall poster noted: “walker still will not allow us in the capitol lets get people downtown to force him to open our house and let us in we need numbers pass the word let do some huge rallies and scare walker right out of his seat support your fellow wisconsinites lets do this. In the words of Obama YES WE CAN !!! ON WISCONSIN!!!”

The Center for Media and Democracy also posted on Kloppenburg’s Facebook Wall, directing her supporters to live reporting from the Wisconsin protests, noting “Center for Media and Democracy Live News Reports from Madison at the Center for Media and Democracy
We have been reporting on Koch since before it was cool!”

Another supporter noted that Kloppenburg is speaking at an event organized by the Young Progressives, College Democrats and Organizing for America called “Activism 101: Taking Back Wisconsin.” It was touted as an organizing conference that will feature techniques for mobilizing the UW student population. Kloppenburg was joining very liberal Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin at the event.

And another supporter noted, “This page has doubled its number of ‘likes’ since I was here last. Thank goodness Scott Walker is a horrible person. :)

Yet another supporter noted, “Right to birth..Republicans clearly are not about helping children.”

A female supporter said, “I’ve just emailed the Rachel Maddow show and asked that she remind .”Wisconsin that Democracy Also Looks Like A Voting Booth. They will almost certainly ignore my email if it’s the only one. However, there are 1,398 people in this group following the campaign. If everyone sent an email to rachel@msnbc.com I bet we could get her attention. Her show has covered the events here every night and they might appreciate a new angle to the story. Take 5 minutes and send an email explaining why a Vote for Kloppenburg is a vote against Walker.”

Yet another supporter wrote,” IMPORTANT – Scott Walker will have control of all of Wisconsin government if we don’t elect JoAnne Kloppenburg for Wisconsin Supreme Court.”

And another: “Look for the Kloppenburg contingent at tomorrow’s rally. Remember, a vote for Prosser is a vote for the Walker agenda. Let’s get out the word about Kloppenburg!”

A supporter on the wall also directs users to an article on the liberal Huffington Post website, which is titled, “Walker and Republicans in WI HATE DOGS..” and is a scathing critique of Walker’s budget bill. The article was posted on Kloppenburg’s wall by a Facebook page user with the handle “Wisconsin For Collective Bargaining.”

Another user also attempted to link Kloppenburg with anti Walker efforts, writing, “This is a pivotal election and our first chance to send Walker a message via ballot. Turn out the vote for April 5th and vote Kloppenburg!”

  1. In other news, Walker continues to be a horrible person and Prosser continues to be a turd.

Can I get some yard signs and information to go around my neighborhood? I think with everything that happened today you have a strong chance of beating Prosser and I would like to help. Thank you and good luck!

  3. Let me get this straight, okay?
If you are Kloppenburg, and your support is coming from a true grassroots movement, spurred on by the shenanigans of the Koch-owned Walker administration – well, that’s just shameful.
On the other hand, if you are Prosser, who promises to be “a complement” to the Koch-owned Walker administration – well that’s just okey-dokey.
    Got it.
Yard signs would be a fine thing. Ones that state “Prosser is a turd” would be favorite.

  4. What I get from this article: People who support Kloppenburg want honesty in a judge, instead of one that will lap up Walker’s crap. Sounds good.

First time on this site. At the top it says, “For everyone looking for fact-based reporting, you’ve come to the right place.” As a person trained in the “old school” of journalism I strongly object to that statement after reading the biased content. I won’t be returning.

I’m a math junkie and followed the entire vote as reported on the AP by precinct…

With JoAnne Kloppenburg still down 835 votes and 24 precincts still to come in, my estimates showed her to take the lead by 366 votes. As it turned out it was 204.

As for Waukesha County, the numbers do not add up…
Kathy Nickolaus claims to have omitted 14,315 votes,
Meaning she did not report 18% of the vote…
How does one “miss” nearly 20% of votes???

    Beyond that…
The reports to CNN would indicate that “total votes” omitted were not 14,315 but rather 14,434…
Where are the other 128 votes???

To me, it appears addition conjured numbers were presented, after the fact and knowing what would be needed, that would still hold fast the 73% vs. 27% Prosser advantage in the county…

However, as stated above, under further scrutiny, the numbers do not add up. Nor with a population of roughly 38,922 does a voter turnout of a 37% seem in line.

In 2007 with a state Supreme Court race, voter turnout was 56%, 44% in 2008…

With the focus on THIS election… historic… 37%???
    I don’t think so…

    Recount the Entire State!!!

    Also…

    In Milwaukee…
    Anyone else notice this???

philip (4/6/2011 8:25:41 AM): to me the last 10 precincts in Mil looked fishy in Prosser’s favor

philip (4/6/2011 8:27:02 AM): the % stayed the same, but Prosser gained over almost 1500 votes in a precinct he was losing 44% to 56%…
    Hmmmm….

    philip (4/6/2011 8:27:50 AM): 3606 of 3630 precincts in

philip (4/6/2011 8:28:12 AM): with Prosser up by 835

philip (4/6/2011 8:28:41 AM): but i still show about 8000 votes still to come in

Linda (4/6/2011 8:30:47 AM): what would they have done?

Linda (4/6/2011 8:30:53 AM): cheat somehow?

philip (4/6/2011 8:31:52 AM): or just made a mistake and put the numbers under the wrong name

    Also curious…

Milwaukee @ 484/486 of precincts reporting:
    98,933 P
    128,644 K
    227,577 Total votes

    Then:

    Milwaukee 486/486
    98,933 P (43%)
    128,644 (57%)
    227,577 Total votes

Two additional precincts and NO votes cast???

“You can take Brookfield, but give us our two missing Milwaukee precincts!!!”

    Just “My Eye On Politics…”

And yes, I am available for hire…
