MILWAUKEE – A contradiction between what Rep. Tammy Baldwin said in a U.S. Senate campaign debate and her record in Congress has been discovered by Media Trackers. Baldwin, a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, voted 5 times against the Keystone XL Pipeline, a major energy development project that would link Canada and the United States together in the production of North American energy. As a U.S. Senate candidate Baldwin has spoken of her support for any tools that reduce the nation’s dependence on foreign oil.

“Certainly becoming energy independent of Mid-East oil is necessary for our economy as well as our national security. And so I think we have to have an all hands on deck approach to this,” Baldwin said on September 29th while debating her senate campaign opponent, former Governor Tommy Thompson.

In a report out today, Collin Roth of Media Trackers points out six votes Baldwin cast, 5 in opposition and one “present,” on the Keystone XL pipeline, a project that would fall under Baldwin’s definition of an “all hands on deck approach” to reducing dependence on Mid-East oil

“When it comes to energy policy, there is a serious gap between what Baldwin is telling people in Wisconsin and how she is voting in Washington,” said Brian Sikma, communications director for Media Trackers. “Rep. Baldwin has not been honest with Wisconsin about her positions on energy policy if you compare her statements with her voting record,” Sikma concluded.
