The League of Women Voters of Florida singled out Republican Speaker of the House Will Weatherford yesterday while advocating for a costly expansion of Medicaid in Florida. The League of Women Voters’ Medicaid advocacy continues a rash of recent leftist Florida advocacy by the supposedly non-partisan group.
Medicaid expansion is a key component of the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. The individual states have the right to determine whether they will participate in the costly Medicaid expansion. In Florida, Medicaid expansion would cost approximately $50 billion during the first 10 years alone. This would add to the state’s $26 billion debt and the federal government’s $17 trillion debt.
Only 20 states are currently participating in Medicaid expansion. Nevertheless, League of Women Voters of Florida president Deirdre Macnab singled out Weatherford in a Tuesday press statement.
“We urge Speaker Weatherford to start the ball rolling now so that the state can accept the $51 billion in federal funding essential to covering nearly a million more hardworking Floridians,” said Macnab.
The League of Women Voters of Florida singled out Weatherford and Republican Gov. Rick Scott in a July presentation claiming putting more people on Medicaid would create 120,000 new jobs. The presentation also claimed that a decision not to expand Medicaid and ramp up state and federal spending on the program would “give away our taxpayer money.”
The League of Women Voters of Florida is increasingly advocating leftist politics in the state. As Media Trackers Florida reported last month, the League actively supported the leftist activist group Dream Defenders’ occupation of the state capitol building after the verdict in the George Zimmerman trial. Also, a December 2012 Media Trackers Florida investigation revealed the League of Women Voters consistently champions controversial leftist political causes.
According to the investigation, for example, the League of Women Voters (LWV) is a strident advocate for Obamacare. The LWV is pushing for costly restrictions on U.S. power plants in the name of fighting global warming. The LWV says people should not have to show a photo identification when voting. The LWV opposes parents having the right to know when their minor children undergo taxpayer-funded abortions.
