MoveOn.org, Unions Jointly Organizing "99% Spring Action Training" Events Across Florida
Working with organizations such as the AFL-CIO, United Auto Workers, and the Progressive Democrats of America, MoveOn.org is actively organizing “99% Spring Action Training” events across Florida. According to an online advertisement of one of the events posted at MoveOn.org’s web site, the training events will include presentations on “how the economy got the way it is, the history of non-violent direct action and future action within the Occupy movement.” The online flier encourages “dialogue and participation from all attendees…in the spirit of Occupy[.]”
The99Spring.com, a site set up in February by MoveOn.org and several dozen other liberal organizations, states that “millions of jobs have been destroyed, homes foreclosed, and an unconscionable number of children live in poverty” all due to “rampant greed.” Richard Trumka, a co-founder of The99Spring and also head of AFL-CIO, earned $293,750 in total compensation in 2011 according to the U.S. Department of Labor; the median income of families in Florida is $53,093. A Wall Street Journal calculator that shows how one’s salary compares to the rest of the country places Mr. Trumka in the top 3% of earners nationwide.
Although the event fliers advertise a discussion of the “history of non-violent direction action,”
many Occupy Wall St. rallies have been anything but non-violent. To date, the Occupy rallies have accounted for at least two incidents of arson, 500 thefts, two murders, ten rapes, and over 4,000 arrests (further documentation on the violence can be found using the sources below). The list of organizers for the the Occupy-esque events is a who’s who of liberal activist groups including Greenpeace, the Working Families Party, Change to Win, The Ruckus Society, Color of Change, and the National Guestworker Alliance.
