HYPOCRISY: Democrats Cheer The Death Of Thousands Of Mining Jobs, Criticize Lack Of Job Creation
By Collin Roth
On Tuesday evening, the Wisconsin State Senate voted to defeat a bill 17-16 that would have streamlined the permitting process for an iron ore mine in Northwestern Wisconsin. The new mine would have brought thousands of good paying jobs to a region beleaguered by the recent economic downturn while sustaining jobs in the Milwaukee area where mining equipment is manufactured.
But after months of complaining about the slow pace of job growth in Wisconsin, all 16 Democratic Senators and Republican Senator Dale Schultz killed a bill with tangible jobs. What is worse, many Democrats celebrated the the defeat of the mining bill, citing upside down notions of virtue and bravery by Senator Schultz.
In the wake of Tuesday’s vote, the mining company Gogebic Taconite issued a statement lamenting the fact that “Wisconsin will not welcome iron mining,” concluding “We get the message.”
And after killing thousands of jobs and investment in Wisconsin, Democrat legislators and liberals in Wisconsin quickly went on the defensive trying to blame Republicans because the “compromise” mining bill with $25 million in new taxes did not see a vote. A look at some of the amazing and hypocritical statements by Democrat lawmakers and individuals on the Left were quite revealing:
“The decision of the State Senate to reject the Assembly mining bill and send it back to committee represents the will of the people…”- Sen Bob Jauch (D-Poplar)
“Senate Republicans failed again to create any good paying jobs in Wisconsin.”- Sen. Mark Miller (D-Monona)
“After all the rhetoric of job creation merits of mining, Republicans today showed that they have no interest in accomplishing a mining bill outside of using it as a political football…Republicans rejected possible job creation in favor of politics.”- Sen. Lena Taylor (D-Milwaukee)
“We applaud the the seventeen senators who listened to the voice of Wisconsin residents and stood up to the bully tactics of out-of-state mining interests by opposing this bill.”- Clean Wisconsin
“I am proud and extend my heartfelt thanks to all 16 Senate Democrats and Republican Senator Schultz for holding strong… Wisconsinites are not fooled by this desperate attempt to distract them from the fact that our state is the only in the nation to see six straight months of job loss since Governor Walker’s economic plan was put into place.”- Rep. Kelda Helen Roys (D-Madison)
“Love the smell of democracy in the morning.” – Bill Christofferson on Uppity Wisconsin
“Today’s vote is a major victory for Wisconsin families and clean drinking water.”- League of Conservation Voters
“The John Muir Chapter is pleased with the announcement that Gogebic Taconite (GTac) will abandon its destructive proposal to mine iron ore in the Penokee Range of Wisconsin.” – Sierra Club
These statements are a precise and accurate reflection of how Democrat lawmakers and Left-wing environmental organizations operate. When real jobs are at stake, when tangible investment is knocking at the door, Democrat lawmakers will find a way to antagonize job creators and impose massive tax hikes on new businesses. And when the proposal to create thousands of new jobs is voted down by 16 Democrats and 1 Republican, it is Democrats who find blame with Republicans for not creating jobs while the environmental groups that fill the Democratic campaign coffers cheer the death of jobs and the loss of investment.
Textbook liberalism at work.
